Hi, I'm Alfie! 🐾

I'm a little flat dog with a very big adventure ahead of me!

I'm travelling around Australia, visiting 100 different hosts to help people learn about assistance animals, disability access and inclusion.

I'll be visiting homes, schools, workplaces, businesses and all sorts of interesting places. Along the way, I'll collect stories, make new friends and help start important conversations.

And here's something you should know about me…

You can't tell my job by my breed!

Assistance animals come in all shapes, sizes and breeds, and they help people with many different disabilities.

Want to get to know me? Come along for the adventure!

Flat Alfie Explores Sydney Harbour.png

🐾 How Does Flat Alfie Work?

One little dog. 100 adventures. And you could be part of his story!

Flat Alfie is travelling around Australia, visiting one host at a time to help people learn about assistance animals, disability access and inclusion.

Every host helps Alfie explore new places, share important messages and collect memories for his Adventure Passport.

Here's how it works!

🐾 Step 1 — Join the Adventure!

Would you like to host Flat Alfie?

Join his waiting list! Individuals, families, schools, workplaces, businesses and community organisations across Australia are welcome.

You don't need to have a disability or an assistance animal to participate. All you need is a willingness to help Alfie spread awareness and return him safely for his next adventure.

📮 Step 2 — Special Delivery!

When it's your turn, Alfie arrives in the post with his special travel pack!

Inside you'll find:

🛏️ Alfie's Travel Bed — A little flat bed where Alfie can rest between adventures and pose for photographs.

💬 Alfie's Speech Bubble — A reusable, laminated speech bubble for sharing facts, challenging myths and giving Alfie something to say.

🚦 Alfie's Traffic-Light Guide — A colourful educational resource explaining the differences between assistance, therapy and companion animals.

📖 Alfie's Passport Page — Your opportunity to record his adventure and contribute memories to his growing Adventure Passport.

📮 Return Stamped Envelope — So Alfie and his belongings can travel safely back to the project team.

You'll also receive simple instructions, educational resources and suggested activities.

🌏 Step 3 — Show Alfie Your World!

Spend approximately five days taking Alfie on adventures!

Take him to your workplace, school, university, favourite café, local shops, community events, tourist attractions or somewhere completely unexpected.

You don't need to plan anything extravagant. Everyday places and experiences are just as important.

Alfie wants to discover what makes your community special while helping people learn about accessibility and inclusion.

🚦 Step 4 — Help Alfie Teach the Traffic Lights!

Alfie's traffic-light guide is designed to make understanding different animal roles and access rights easier.

🟢 GREEN — Assistance Animals

Assistance animals that meet legal requirements have public-access rights, subject to lawful conditions and exceptions.

🟡 YELLOW — Therapy Animals

Therapy animals visit facilities, schools, hospitals and other settings with permission. Their therapy role does not automatically provide general public-access rights.

🔴 RED — Companion Animals

Companion animals are pets that are welcome to visit pet-friendly places or other locations where permission or a separate legal entitlement allows them.

Why does this matter?

Confusion about animal roles and access rights can contribute to unlawful refusals, inappropriate questioning, disability discrimination and misunderstandings between businesses, the public and assistance-animal handlers.

The traffic-light system aims to:

  • Help businesses and the public recognise that qualifying assistance animals have legal access rights.

  • Reduce avoidable public-access refusals and the risk of disability discrimination.

  • Help people understand why therapy animals and companion animals do not automatically have the same access rights.

  • Encourage appropriate, respectful interactions with assistance-animal teams.

  • Promote informed, consistent decisions about animal access.

The traffic lights are an educational guide, not a substitute for the applicable law or an animal's individual eligibility.

The goal is simple: better understanding, fewer misunderstandings and more inclusive communities.

💬 Step 5 — Give Alfie Something to Say!

Alfie comes with his own reusable speech bubble!

Use a whiteboard marker to write a message, place the speech bubble beside Alfie and take a photograph.

We'll provide a selection of suggested messages, or you can create your own!

For example:

"You can't tell my job by my breed (or species)!"

"Not every disability is visible!"

"Please don't distract an assistance animal while they're working!"

"A therapy animal isn't an assistance animal!"

"Assistance animals come in all shapes and sizes!"

"Did you know assistance animals can perform many different tasks?"

"Ask questions respectfully — but don't assume!"

You can also write something about Alfie's adventures:

"I'm visiting Canberra today!"

"Look where I went!"

"Adventure #25 — halfway to 50!"

The speech bubble is designed to help people share accurate facts, challenge common myths and start positive conversations about assistance animals.

You only need a whiteboard marker — the speech bubble is supplied!

Please use a wipe-clean marker, avoid permanent markers and clean the bubble before returning it.

📸 Step 6 — Share Alfie's Adventures!

We want to see where Alfie goes!

Take photographs of Alfie visiting interesting places, meeting people, sharing his traffic-light messages and using his speech bubble.

Share your adventures on your own social-media accounts using #FlatAlfie.

Tag the official Flat Alfie social-media account when available so we can find your adventures.

With your permission, we'll reshare selected photographs, stories and educational messages on the Flat Alfie social-media channels and flatalfie.com.au.

That means Alfie's adventures can reach far beyond the people he physically visits!

You might inspire another family, school, workplace or business to join the project or learn something new about assistance animals.

Every post is another opportunity to educate, include and make a difference.

Public social-media sharing is encouraged but optional. Hosts who prefer not to post publicly can still contribute to Alfie's Adventure Passport. Please obtain permission before photographing or identifying other people, particularly children.

📖 Step 7 — Add Your Story to Alfie's Adventure Passport!

Every host receives a special page to complete for Alfie's Adventure Passport.

This is your chance to leave a little piece of your adventure behind!

You can include:

  • Where Alfie visited and when.

  • A short story about what you did together.

  • Photographs or drawings.

  • Stickers, stamps and postcards.

  • Tickets from attractions, museums or events.

  • Small, flat mementos from his travels.

  • Something interesting you learned about assistance animals.

  • A message for Alfie's future hosts.

Get creative!

Maybe Alfie visited a zoo, travelled on a train, attended a festival, explored a botanical garden or spent the day at university.

Your passport page will help tell that story.

When Alfie's visit ends, return your completed passport page with him.

We'll add it to his growing Adventure Passport, creating a physical record of his travels around Australia.

Imagine looking back after 100 adventures and seeing all the places he's visited, the people he's met and the memories his hosts have contributed!

Please avoid including private addresses or personal information, and only include photographs or materials you have permission to share.

📬 Step 8 — Send Alfie Safely Home!

After approximately five days, it's time for Alfie to continue his journey.

Before sending him home, make sure you've packed:

  • Flat Alfie.

  • His travel bed.

  • His reusable speech bubble.

  • His traffic-light guide.

  • Your completed Adventure Passport page.

  • Any other reusable materials supplied with his pack.

Place everything into the provided stamped return envelope and send Alfie safely back to the project team.

Once he arrives, we'll check his belongings, add your page to his Adventure Passport, record his completed journey and prepare him for his next host.

Then Alfie is off on another adventure!

🌟 Help Alfie Reach 100 Adventures!

One little dog. 100 hosts. Countless opportunities to learn.

Every host helps Alfie explore Australia, collect memories, challenge misconceptions and encourage better understanding of assistance animals.

And the best part?

You don't have to do anything extraordinary to make a difference.

Sometimes all it takes is one photograph, one conversation or one fact that somebody didn't know before.

Will you be part of Alfie's story?

🎒 What's in Alfie's Travel Pack?

Alfie may be flat, but he's packed for a big adventure!

Every time Flat Alfie visits a new host, he brings a special collection of travelling essentials. Each item has a purpose: helping Alfie explore new places, collect memories, start conversations and spread awareness about assistance animals, accessibility and inclusion.

🐾 Flat Alfie Himself!

Meet ALFIE-001 — our original travelling dog!

Alfie is a colourful, cartoon-style cut-out, small enough to take almost anywhere. He's ready to pose for photographs, explore new places and become part of your everyday adventures.

🛏️ Alfie's Travel Bed

Even little travelling dogs need somewhere to rest!

Alfie brings his own miniature, flat travel bed so you can give him a cosy place to settle between adventures.

Set up his bed at home, in your workplace, at school or somewhere interesting, and photograph Alfie enjoying a well-earned rest.

💬 Alfie's Speech Bubble

Give Alfie a voice and help him spread the word!

Alfie brings a reusable speech bubble that you can write on with an ordinary whiteboard marker.

We'll provide suggested messages, or you can make up your own!

Try:

  • "You can't tell my job by my breed!"

  • "Not every disability is visible!"

  • "Please don't distract working assistance animals!"

  • "Assistance animals come in all shapes and sizes!"

  • "Different animals have different roles!"

  • "Look where I am today!"

Use the speech bubble in your photographs, help dispel common myths and start conversations about assistance animals.

Just wipe it clean before Alfie heads home!

🚦 Alfie's Traffic-Light Guide

Three colours. Three different roles. One important message.

Alfie's traffic-light guide helps explain the different access arrangements for assistance, therapy and companion animals.

🟢 GREEN — Assistance Animals

Qualifying assistance animals have public-access rights under applicable law, subject to lawful conditions and exceptions.

🟡 YELLOW — Therapy Animals

Therapy animals generally access participating facilities and other settings with permission. Their therapy role does not automatically provide general public-access rights.

🔴 RED — Companion Animals

Companion animals generally access pet-friendly places or other settings where permission or a separate legal entitlement applies.

Why is this important?

Misunderstanding animal roles and access rights can contribute to inappropriate refusals, unnecessary conflict and disability discrimination.

By sharing Alfie's traffic-light message, you can help businesses and the public better understand their responsibilities, respect assistance-animal teams and make more informed decisions about access.

Our goal is to reduce misunderstandings, help prevent unlawful public-access refusals and encourage more inclusive communities.

The traffic lights are a simple educational guide, not a substitute for applicable law.

📖 Alfie's Adventure Passport

Every host adds another page to Alfie's story!

You'll receive your own Adventure Passport page to decorate and complete during Alfie's visit.

Tell us where Alfie went, what he did and what you learned together.

You can add photographs, drawings, postcards, stickers, tickets and small, flat mementos from your adventures.

When it's time for Alfie to leave, return your completed page with him.

We'll add it to his growing Adventure Passport, creating a unique collection of memories from his first 100 journeys around Australia.

Imagine the stories Alfie's passport will tell when he finishes his adventure!

📮 Alfie's Return Envelope

When your adventure is finished, Alfie needs to travel safely home before visiting his next host.

We'll provide a stamped, self-addressed return envelope and simple packing instructions so you can send Alfie, his bed, speech bubble, traffic-light guide and completed passport page back to the project team.

Once he arrives, we'll check his belongings, add your memories to his passport and prepare him for his next destination.

🌏 One Little Travel Pack. So Many Possibilities!

Whether Alfie visits your classroom, workplace, favourite café, local park or a famous Australian landmark, every adventure offers a chance to learn something new.

Take Alfie somewhere. Give him something to say. Help him teach something. Add your story to his passport.

Then send him safely home so his adventure can continue!

🚦 Learn With Flat Alfie!

Different Animals. Different Roles. A More Inclusive Australia.

Most people recognise a guide dog. But would you recognise a medical-alert parrot?

When we think of assistance animals, many of us picture a Labrador or Golden Retriever guiding someone with vision impairment.

But assistance animals can look very different!

Some help people navigate their surroundings, others alert their handlers to medical changes, retrieve essential items, respond to psychiatric disability-related needs or assist people with hearing impairments.

And did you know that Australian disability discrimination law refers to dogs and other animals, not just particular breeds or species?

That's why Alfie wants to teach everyone about his special traffic lights!

Three colours. Three different roles. One goal: a more inclusive Australia.

🟢 GREEN — Assistance Animals

Trained to support an individual person with disability.

Assistance animals are trained to help a particular person by alleviating the effects of their disability.

You might recognise a guide dog helping someone navigate safely. But what about a hearing assistance dog, a medical-alert dog, a mobility-support miniature horse, an assistance cat or even a specially trained parrot?

An animal's species does not automatically exclude it from the Australian legal definition of an assistance animal. However, it must meet the applicable legal requirements, including relevant training, hygiene and behaviour standards.

🐾 Did You Know Any Dog Breed Can Be an Assistance Dog?

You can't tell an assistance dog's job by its breed!

Assistance dogs don't have to be Labradors, Golden Retrievers or German Shepherds.

From tiny Chihuahuas and lively Terriers to Border Collies, Staffies, Great Danes and mixed-breed dogs, any breed can potentially produce a suitable assistance dog.

What matters isn't a dog's pedigree, size, colour or appearance. It's the individual animal's suitability, including its temperament, health, welfare, training and ability to perform disability-related tasks safely and reliably.

A small dog might be trained to alert its handler to a medical event, while a larger dog might retrieve items or perform appropriate mobility-related tasks.

However, not every dog is suitable for assistance work, regardless of breed. Every prospective assistance animal needs individual assessment and appropriate training.

An assistance animal's ability matters more than its appearance!

And remember: you can't tell whether someone has a disability just by looking at them, either.

🌏 Where Can Assistance Animals Go?

Qualifying assistance animals have protected access to many public places under Australian law, including:

  • Shops and shopping centres.

  • Cafés and restaurants.

  • Public transport.

  • Workplaces.

  • Schools and universities.

  • Hotels and accommodation.

  • Healthcare facilities.

  • Many other public and community environments.

These rights are protected under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth), subject to applicable legal requirements and lawful exceptions.

Specific restrictions may apply in certain quarantine areas, sterile environments, food-preparation areas and other situations involving genuine health or safety requirements. Restrictions must be assessed under the relevant law rather than assumed to apply automatically.

The important message: An assistance animal's rights aren't determined by its breed, size, appearance or whether its handler has a visible disability.

🟡 YELLOW — Therapy Animals

Helping people through approved visits and activities.

You've probably seen a therapy dog visiting a hospital, nursing home, school or courthouse.

Therapy animals can provide valuable support through structured visits and activities. They may help people feel calmer, encourage social interaction, support emotional wellbeing or participate in therapeutic and educational programs.

In Australia, some programs use terms such as visitation animals or facility animals to describe these roles.

Unlike assistance animals, which are trained to alleviate the effects of an individual handler's disability, visiting therapy animals generally work with multiple people in approved environments to provide companionship and support.

🌏 Where Can Therapy Animals Go?

Therapy animals do not automatically receive the general public-access protections provided to qualifying assistance animals.

They require permission from the proprietor, facility manager or other person responsible for the premises.

For example, a therapy dog might be invited to visit patients in a hospital, support residents in an aged-care facility or participate in a school wellbeing program.

That permission does not automatically extend to unrelated public places.

🐾 What About Emotional Support Animals?

In the United States, you may hear the term emotional support animal.

Although these animals can provide important emotional support, they are not the same as visiting therapy animals.

An emotional support animal typically provides companionship or emotional support to its own person, while a visiting therapy animal generally participates in activities intended to benefit other people.

These categories should not be confused with legally recognised assistance animals. Their rights and requirements depend on the jurisdiction and circumstances.

The important message: Therapy animals provide valuable services, but their role does not automatically give them assistance-animal public-access rights.

🔴 RED — Companion Animals

Our much-loved pets!

Companion animals are the dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and other animals we share our homes and lives with.

They provide friendship, enjoyment, affection and emotional connection.

For many people, companion animals are cherished members of the family.

But providing companionship or emotional comfort alone does not establish assistance-animal status.

🌏 Where Can Companion Animals Go?

Companion animals visit pet-friendly places or other locations where the person responsible for the premises permits them.

Examples might include pet-friendly parks, beaches, cafés, pet and ahrdware stores, accommodation and community events.

Access may also depend on local rules, animal-control requirements and other applicable laws.

The important message: Every animal deserves appropriate care and respect, but not every animal has the same public-access rights.

Flat Alfie at Cape Byron Lighthouse.png

💚 Why Do Alfie's Traffic Lights Matter?

Imagine being refused entry to a shop because your assistance dog is a Chihuahua rather than a Labrador.

Or imagine being questioned because your assistance animal is a cat, or because your disability isn't immediately visible.

Now imagine a business being unsure whether a visiting therapy dog has the same rights as a qualified assistance animal.

These misunderstandings can create unnecessary conflict, exclusion and, in some circumstances, unlawful disability discrimination.

Alfie's traffic-light system is designed to make understanding animal roles and access rights easier for everyone.

By sharing these simple messages, we aim to:

  • Reduce avoidable public-access refusals involving qualifying assistance animals.

  • Help prevent disability discrimination arising from misunderstandings about animal roles, breeds or disability.

  • Challenge stereotypes about what an assistance animal should look like.

  • Improve public understanding of the differences between assistance, therapy and companion animals.

  • Support businesses and organisations to make informed, respectful and legally appropriate access decisions.

  • Encourage safe interactions between people, animals and the wider community.

  • Promote animal welfare, responsible handling and inclusive environments.

The traffic lights are a simplified educational guide, not a legal access permit. Actual rights and restrictions depend on applicable law and individual circumstances.

Three colours. Three different roles. One goal: better understanding.

🐾 How to Be Animal-Friendly and Disability-Inclusive

Whether you encounter an assistance animal, therapy animal or companion animal, a few simple behaviours can make a big difference.

✋ Always Ask Before Approaching or Touching an Animal

Never assume an animal wants to be patted, even if it looks friendly.

Ask the person responsible for the animal before approaching, touching or interacting with it.

And remember, being given permission to approach doesn't mean the animal must interact with you.

🦮 Don't Distract a Working Assistance Animal

Avoid calling, whistling, touching, feeding or deliberately attracting its attention.

A working assistance animal may be monitoring its handler, responding to medical changes or performing another important disability-related task.

Distraction can interfere with that work.

💚 Respect the Handler's Privacy

You don't need to know someone's diagnosis, medical history or personal circumstances to treat them respectfully.

A disability doesn't have to be visible to be real.

🦴 Don't Offer Food or Treats Without Permission

Animals may have allergies, dietary restrictions, medical conditions or specific training requirements.

Never feed someone else's animal without permission.

🐕 Give Animals Space

Don't crowd, corner, chase or force an animal to interact.

Keep your own animals appropriately controlled and avoid allowing them to rush towards working animals.

👧 Teach Children to Ask First

Children should learn that not every animal is available for patting or play.

An adult should supervise interactions and help children recognise when an animal needs space or is working.

🏪 Businesses: Know Your Rights and Responsibilities

Assistance animals have legally protected public-access rights in Australia, but there are legitimate circumstances where access may lawfully be refused or restricted.

These may include situations involving genuine concerns such as where an animal that is not appropriately controlled, or circumstances where the animal does not meet the relevant legal requirements.

However, an unfamiliar breed, unusual species, lack of a vest or a handler's non-visible disability is not, by itself, a valid reason to refuse access.

Understanding when access must be provided—and when refusal may be legally justified—helps businesses protect public safety, respect disability rights and avoid unlawful discrimination.

Not sure what your responsibilities are?

The Working Animals Federation of Australia (WAFA) provides educational resources, guidance and support to help businesses understand assistance-animal access rights, lawful exceptions and their responsibilities under Australian law.

💬 Help Alfie Bust a Myth!

Alfie loves challenging misconceptions about assistance animals!

That's why he travels with his own reusable speech bubble.

Hosts can write a message using a whiteboard marker, photograph Alfie during an adventure and share it using #FlatAlfie.

"You can't tell my job by my breed!"

"Assistance animals come in every breed and size!"

"Not every disability is visible!"

"Please ask before patting me!"

"A vest doesn't automatically make an animal an assistance animal!"

"Therapy animals and assistance animals have different roles!"

"Different animals. Different roles. Different access rights!"

"Did you know assistance animals aren't always dogs?"

"Please don't distract me while I'm working!"

We'll provide suggested messages, or you can create your own!

Just make sure the information is accurate, write it on the reusable speech bubble and wipe it clean before returning Alfie.

📸 Share Alfie's Message!

You don't need to travel far or spend money. Everyday adventures are just as valuable.

Remember that Alfie is an educational cut-out, not a real assistance animal or proof of public-access rights.

💬 What should I write in Alfie's speech bubble?

Anything fun, friendly and accurate!

We'll provide suggested phrases to help you share facts and challenge myths about assistance animals.

For example:

  • "You can't tell my job by my breed!"

  • "Assistance animals aren't always dogs!"

  • "Different animals have different roles!"

🚦 What are Alfie's traffic lights?

Alfie's traffic lights help explain three different animal roles:

🟢 Green — Assistance Animals: Qualifying assistance animals have public-access rights under applicable law, subject to lawful requirements and exceptions.

🟡 Yellow — Therapy Animals: Generally visit participating facilities and settings with permission.

🔴 Red — Companion Animals: Generally visit pet-friendly or otherwise permitted places.

The traffic lights are designed to improve understanding, help prevent disability discrimination and reduce avoidable public-access refusals.

They are an educational guide rather than a legal access permit.

📸 Do I have to post photographs on social media?

No. Public social-media sharing is optional.

We encourage hosts to share Alfie's adventures on their own accounts using #FlatAlfie and tag the official Flat Alfie channels.

With your permission, we may reshare selected photographs and stories on the Flat Alfie website and social-media accounts.

If you'd prefer not to post publicly, you can still participate and contribute memories to Alfie's Adventure Passport.

📖 What is Alfie's Adventure Passport?

Every host receives a special passport page to complete.

You can decorate it with photographs, drawings, stickers, postcards, tickets, stamps and small, flat mementos from Alfie's visit.

When Alfie returns, we'll add your completed page to his growing Adventure Passport.

After 100 completed adventures, he'll have a wonderful physical collection of memories from across Australia!

Please don't include private addresses, confidential information or photographs of people without appropriate permission.

📬 Where do I send Alfie when we're finished?

Alfie returns to the project team after every adventure.

Place Alfie, his bed, speech bubble, traffic-light guide, completed passport page and other reusable materials into the supplied return envelope.

Follow the included return instructions and post him back.

Please don't send Alfie directly to another host.

This helps protect everyone's privacy and allows the project team to check his belongings and prepare him for his next adventure.

🐾 What happens if Alfie is lost or damaged?

Accidents can happen!

If Alfie or one of his travelling belongings is lost, damaged or accidentally left behind, contact the project team as soon as possible.

Please don't attempt to replace or permanently modify the original travelling character without checking with us first.

We'll help work out what happens next.

🏠 Will my home address appear on the website?

No.

Host postal addresses are collected privately for arranging deliveries and returns.

Public adventure updates will use broad locations, such as a town, city or state, rather than private residential addresses.

Personal details will be handled according to the project's privacy policy.

👧 Can children and schools participate?

Absolutely!

Schools, early childhood services and families can use Flat Alfie to encourage conversations about animal roles, disability inclusion, respectful behaviour and accessibility.

A responsible adult or authorised organisation must manage registration and hosting.

Photographs of children must only be shared with appropriate permissions and in accordance with relevant safeguarding and organisational requirements.

📚 Is Flat Alfie a research project?

Flat Alfie is a community-education initiative, with a proposed evaluation of the first 100 completed journeys.

The evaluation aims to explore participation, reach, educational engagement, implementation and operating costs.

Hosting Alfie does not automatically enrol you in research.

Any research participation requiring consent will be explained and managed separately, subject to applicable ethics requirements.

🐕 Is Flat Alfie a real assistance dog?

No!

Flat Alfie is a cartoon cut-out representing an assistance-animal education character.

His adventures help people understand real assistance animals, the diversity of animals and disabilities, public-access rights and responsibilities, and respectful interactions.

Alfie is an educational ambassador, not a living assistance animal.

💚 Who supports Flat Alfie?

The Flat Alfie project received a $1,000 base grant from the Working Animals Federation of Australia (WAFA).

WAFA also provides access to information about assistance animals, therapy animals, animal welfare, public-access education, support services and professional credentials.

But first, Alfie has a whole country to explore!

💚 How Can You Help Flat Alfie?

Little Dog. Big Mission. And You Can Make a Big Difference!

You don't have to host Flat Alfie to be part of his adventure!

Alfie is travelling around Australia to help people better understand assistance animals, public-access rights, disability and inclusion.

His goal is to complete 100 adventures, but his message can travel much further with your help!

Whether you're an individual, family, school, business, organisation or simply someone who believes in making Australia more inclusive, there are lots of ways to get involved.

📣 2. Tell Your Family and Friends!

One of the easiest ways to help Alfie is simply to spread the word.

Tell your friends, family, colleagues, classmates and community groups about his adventures.

💬 5. Help Alfie Share Accurate Information!

You don't need to be an assistance-animal expert to help make a difference.

Explore Alfie's traffic-light education system and share what you've learned with others.

Help people understand the differences between:

🟢 Assistance Animals — Legally protected public-access rights, subject to applicable requirements and exceptions.

🟡 Therapy Animals — Generally participate in approved activities and facilities with permission.

🔴 Companion Animals — Generally visit pet-friendly or otherwise permitted places.

You can also help challenge common myths, such as the belief that all assistance dogs must be Labradors or that every disability is visible.

For more detailed education, free resources and support, visit the Working Animals Federation of Australia (WAFA) at workinganimals.com.au.

🏫 6. Encourage Your School, Workplace or Organisation to Get Involved!

Could your school host Alfie for a week?

Would your workplace like to share his traffic-light education resources?

Could your community organisation introduce Flat Alfie to its members?

Encourage the people and organisations around you to follow his adventures, display the supporter logo, share educational resources or join the host waiting list.

Every new community Alfie reaches is another opportunity to encourage understanding and inclusion.

📮 7. Host Flat Alfie!

Want to be part of Alfie's story in a very special way?

Join his host waiting list!

If selected, you'll welcome Alfie for approximately five days, take him on adventures, share educational messages using his speech bubble and traffic-light guide, and contribute your own page to his Adventure Passport.

Then you'll send Alfie safely home so his next adventure can begin.

And there's a little thank-you for every completed hosting adventure!

🎉 8. Earn Your "I Hosted Flat Alfie!" Keepsakes!

Every host who successfully completes their adventure will receive special Flat Alfie keepsakes to celebrate their contribution.

📖 Your Place in Alfie's Adventure Passport

Your completed passport page becomes part of Alfie's growing collection of adventures, memories, tickets, stickers and stories.

After 100 journeys, you'll have helped create a unique record of Alfie's travels!

Host badges and certificates recognise participation in Flat Alfie. They are not assistance-animal credentials, accessibility accreditations or professional certifications.

💚 Every Little Action Helps!

You don't need to travel across Australia to help Alfie make a difference.

You might host him, follow his adventures, share a photograph, display his logo, encourage a school to participate or simply teach someone one new fact about assistance animals.

Every action helps Alfie's message reach another person.

Together, we can encourage better understanding, fewer access-related misunderstandings and a more inclusive Australia.

💚 About Flat Alfie

Little Dog. Big Mission.

Big changes can start with little conversations!

Flat Alfie is an Australian community-education initiative designed to help people better understand assistance animals, public-access rights, disability and inclusion.

Through one little travelling cartoon dog, we're taking important educational messages beyond traditional classrooms, websites and awareness campaigns and into everyday Australian communities.

Alfie visits homes, schools, workplaces, businesses and community organisations, encouraging people to learn something new, challenge common misconceptions and share what they've discovered.

🐾 Why Was Flat Alfie Created?

Many people recognise a traditional guide dog, but fewer understand the diversity of assistance-animal breeds, species, tasks and disabilities.

Misunderstandings about assistance animals can contribute to inappropriate interactions, unnecessary access refusals and disability discrimination.

Flat Alfie was developed to help make these conversations easier, friendlier and more accessible.

His simple traffic-light education system explains the differences between assistance, therapy and companion animals, while his reusable speech bubble encourages people to share facts and challenge myths.

Our mission is to encourage better understanding, fewer misunderstandings and a more inclusive Australia.

🌏 The First 100 Adventures

Alfie's first mission is to complete 100 journeys around Australia.

Each host welcomes Alfie for approximately five days, takes him on adventures, shares educational messages and contributes a page to his growing Adventure Passport.

Through photographs, stories, tickets, stickers and mementos, Alfie will create a unique record of the communities he visits.

The first 100 completed journeys will also provide an opportunity to evaluate the project's reach, engagement, educational activities and operating costs.

💚 Who Funds Flat Alfie?

The Flat Alfie Project received a $1,000 base grant from the Working Animals Federation of Australia (WAFA).

WAFA provides education, support, advocacy, professional development and credentialing initiatives relating to working animals and their handlers.

🐾 What's Next for Alfie?

Alfie's first 100 adventures are only the beginning!

Future plans may include collectible plush characters, children's books, additional educational resources and new travelling adventures.

But first, Alfie has a whole country to explore!

One little dog. 100 adventures. Countless opportunities to make a difference.

Help Us Make Assistance-Animal Discrimination a Thing of the Past!

We're looking for passionate, creative and like-minded people who want to make a real difference!

Flat Alfie might be a little cartoon dog, but behind his big mission is something very real.

We've experienced assistance-animal discrimination firsthand.

We know what it feels like to be refused entry, questioned, misunderstood or made to feel unwelcome simply because we rely on an assistance animal.

We know how exhausting it can be to repeatedly explain your rights, justify your animal's presence or advocate for access to places other people enter without a second thought.

And we believe it shouldn't have to be this way.

Our dream is to make discrimination against people who use assistance animals a thing of the past.

We know that changing attitudes takes more than legislation. It takes education, understanding, conversations and people who care enough to help make change happen.

That's why we created Flat Alfie.

Through one little travelling dog, we're bringing assistance-animal education into homes, schools, workplaces, businesses and communities across Australia.

But we can't do it alone.

🐾 Could You Share Your Skills With Alfie?

We're looking for volunteers who can help bring Flat Alfie's adventures to life!

You don't need to be an assistance-animal expert. If you believe in disability inclusion and have skills, ideas or enthusiasm to contribute, we'd love to hear from you.

We're particularly interested in people who enjoy:

📱 Social Media & Content Creation

Help manage Flat Alfie's social-media channels, share his adventures, create engaging posts, respond to enquiries and spread accurate educational messages.

💻 Websites & Digital Technology

Help develop and maintain flatalfie.com.au, improve accessibility, create online forms, manage digital resources and support Alfie's interactive adventure map.

🎨 Graphic Design & Digital Art

Create illustrations, educational graphics, printable activities, certificates, stickers, supporter badges and other materials that help Alfie's message travel further.

📸 Photography & Video

Help turn Alfie's adventures into engaging photographs, short videos, reels and other creative content.

✍️ Writing, Editing & Education

Help create accessible educational resources, myth-busting activities, newsletters, stories and content for schools, businesses and the wider community.

📣 Community Engagement & Promotion

Help introduce Flat Alfie to schools, workplaces, businesses, community organisations and potential hosts across Australia.

📊 Research, Data & Project Support

Help with appropriate administrative tasks, journey tracking, project organisation and evaluation activities, subject to privacy, research ethics and relevant supervision requirements.

🌏 Volunteer From Anywhere in Australia!

You don't need to live near the project team to make a difference.

Many of these activities can be undertaken remotely, making Flat Alfie a great opportunity for people who want to contribute their skills from home.

Whether you can offer a few hours occasionally, help with a specific project or contribute more regularly, we'd love to explore how you could get involved.

We also welcome volunteers with disability, neurodivergent volunteers and people with lived experience of assistance-animal discrimination.

We value different perspectives, accessible communication and flexible ways of contributing.

Your skills could help Alfie's message reach thousands of people beyond his first 100 hosts.

💚 More Than a Volunteer Project — A Shared Mission

We're not just trying to send a little cartoon dog around Australia.

We're trying to change the conversations people have about assistance animals.

We want a future where:

  • Assistance-animal handlers aren't routinely challenged because their animals don't look like traditional guide dogs.

  • People understand that disability isn't always visible.

  • Businesses know both their responsibilities and the legitimate circumstances in which animal access may be restricted.

  • The public understands the differences between assistance, therapy and companion animals.

  • Working animals and their handlers are treated with dignity and respect.

  • People with disability can participate in their communities without constantly having to fight for access.

We believe education can help make that future possible.

And we'd love to work alongside people who share that vision.

🐾 Help Alfie Make a Difference!

Are you creative, technically minded, passionate about accessibility, experienced with social media or simply keen to lend a hand?

We'd love to hear from you!

You don't need every skill listed above. You don't need to have an assistance animal. And you don't need to have experienced discrimination yourself.

You just need to believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness and respect.
